Sarah Oh · 오승연
A Los Angeles–based artist, educator, and curator specializing in Korean Folk Art (Minhwa) and Asian Brush Painting.
With more than 35 years of artistic experience, she has dedicated her career to preserving and sharing the beauty of traditional Korean art — while exploring contemporary interpretations drawn from nature, music, literature, and imagination. As her recent «Visual Music» series shows, her newest work lets sound, color, and the old symbols of folk painting meet within a single frame.
Her materials are precise: Korean ink, Korean watercolor, and the pearl iridescence of mother-of-pearl laid on Xuan paper. The enduring symbols of Minhwa — peonies and lotus, tigers and fish — are reborn through her own humor and lyricism, as a rooster playing the viola or a chicken in a ballet skirt.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes patience, encouragement, and artistic discovery. She believes every student can build confidence and creativity through the practice of brush painting. Through exhibitions, workshops, and community engagement, she continues to build cultural bridges, introducing the rich traditions of Korean art to diverse audiences.
